As I’ve previously mentioned, I often consider myself a science major with a music major, too. However, in light of the new season of Game of Thrones, I’ve been appreciating the music of the HBO show much more than I would without my music major. Ramin Dwajadi, the primary composer of the film score, creates musical themes (a specific musical melody with distinct rhythm) for each character, and as they interact with other characters, he weaves their themes together in a way that reflects their relationship (lovers, adversaries, relatives, etc). Whether the audience realizes, Dwajadi is influencing how they think and feel about each character and their interactions. It is amazing, to me, that someone could have such power with music. The patterns and weavings used by Dwajadi intrigues me and allows me to both listen for pleasure and intellectually analyze the music for the genius it beholds. This extra dimensionality enriches both the music and Game of Thrones as a show, and I feel blessed to be a music major for this reason.
